La Antigua, Guatemala. June  05 to 06, 2014 . Porta Hotel Antigua 8 Calle Poniente No.1 La Antigua, Guatemala Centro América, 03001.

BACKGROUND

From its inception in 1975, the Permanent Secretariat of SELA has attached priority to the issue of international cooperation, which is one of the objectives and fundamental purposes set forth in the Panama Convention. Such priority was ratified at the IX Regular Meeting of the Latin American Council of SELA (1983), whose Decision No. 156 designates the organization as the “Regional Focal Point for the Exchange of Information on Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries.”

In addition, the importance of this regional meeting space was ratified by the Latin American Council at its XXXVIII Regular Meeting (17-19 October 2012) by Decision N ° 538, related to the “Meetings of International Cooperation Directors for Latin America and the Caribbean.”

In order to promote regional and international cooperation, SELA has conducted since 1987 the Meeting of International Cooperation Directors for Latin America and the Caribbean, which provide an excellent space for rapprochement of regional cooperation stakeholders and for the exchange of ideas, experiences and best practices from a Latin American and Caribbean perspective. Each year, the meeting selects a topic considered to be of high priority for the region and evaluates the various cooperation initiatives undertaken by the different regional and subregional integration mechanisms and schemes.

The topic selected for 2014 is “Cooperation and migrants’ remittances: Impact on savings, investment and development,” which will be addressed within the framework of the XXV Meeting of International Cooperation Directors for Latin America and the Caribbean. This event, to be held on 5 and 6 June in Antigua, Guatemala, is being organized by SELA and the Government of Guatemala, through the Ministry of Economy (MINECO) and the Secretariat of Planning and Programming of the Presidency (SEGEPLAN), with the support of the Pérez-Guerrero Trust Fund (PGTF) of the Group of 77 and other regional bodies specialized in the subject.
