SELA organizes VII Meeting on Public-Private Partnerships for Disaster Risk Reduction

The meeting will analyse the region´s best practices for efficient, sustainable and responsible construction, as well as the resilience of physical infrastructure, particularly hospitals, health services and educational and cultural facilities.

The Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UN/ISDR), jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico (SRE), Cementos Mexicanos (CEMEX) and the Inter-American Conference on Social Security (CISS), will hold the VII Meeting on Public-Private Partnerships for Disaster Risk Reduction in Latin America and the Caribbean: Building resilient infrastructures, in Mexico City, on 20 and 21 November 2018.

The Sendai Framework, as approved by the United Nations, emphasizes the need to establish public-private partnerships for disaster risk reduction, due to their economic and social impact on the region and the need to develop contingency, continuity and prevention plans. In this connection, the two-day event will address from various angles resilience of physical infrastructure and the contribution of corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a resource for strengthening resilience to the damages and impacts caused by natural phenomena.

The occasion will also serve to sign two important institutional arrangements: the first one for establishing the National Chapter in Mexico of the Private Sector Alliance for Societies Resilient to Disasters (ARISE) and the second one for cooperation between SELA and the CISS. In addition, there will be a presentation on the progresses made with the Initiative of the Private Sector Alliance for Societies Resilient to Disasters (ARISE).

The opening session will feature speeches by the Permanent Secretary of SELA, Ambassador Javier Paulinich; the Head of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UN/ISDR), Raúl Salazar; accompanied by a representative of the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, the General Secretary of the Inter-American Conference on Social Security (CISS), Omar de la Torre; and the Manager of Inclusive Business of Cementos Mexicanos (CEMEX), Alejandra Mora; among other high-level personalities.
