SELA DECLARATION ON THE SITUATION IN HAITI

Caracas, Venezuela, 14 January 2010- The Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) expresses its sorrow and solidarity to the government and people of Haiti in the wake of the major earthquake that devastated this country, on 12 January, causing serious human and material losses.
In view of such a sad event, the Permanent Secretary of SELA, Ambassador José Rivera Banuet, expressed the organization’s willingness to offer collaboration within its reach, considering the critical situation being faced by this country.
These adverse events reveal the need for the region to continue with its efforts in the area of disaster risk reduction and to improve the response mechanisms to ensure cooperation and humanitarian aid.
