Caracas, 9 September 2010 - The "Trade and Development Report 2010. Employment, Globalization and Development", prepared by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), based in Geneva, Switzerland, will be launched on Monday 13 September at the headquarters of the Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) in Caracas.

Participants in this event will include Ambassador José Rivera Banuet, Permanent Secretary of SELA, and Dr. Alfredo Calcagno, Representative of the Secretary General of UNCTAD, who will present the Report, to be released simultaneously in different regions of the world by other officials of the United Nations.

UNCTAD's Report notes that unemployment is the more pressing social and economic problem of our time, among other things because it is closely related to poverty, particularly in developing countries.

This Report provides a comprehensive analysis on the relationship among employment, globalization and development, especially in the current post-crisis era, and suggests policies aimed at achieving a sustained development. Among these policies are the growth of domestic demand, increased productivity, countercyclical fiscal policies, monetary and financial policies for job creation, more efficient inflation control, and public policies for adoption of alternative approaches to increasing employment.

Considering the importance of the Report, which is published annually since 1981 and analyzes current economic trends and major policy issues of international interest and makes suggestions to deal with these subjects at different levels, UNCTAD's official will discuss its content with representatives of diplomatic missions in Venezuela, international organizations accredited to the country, higher education institutions, civil society organizations and media after its presentation.
