ECLAC INAUGURATES THE REGIONAL PREPARATORY MEETING FOR THE III MINISTERIAL CONFERENCE ABOUT THE INFORMATION SOCIETY

The Secretary of the Presidency of the Republic of Uruguay, Alberto Breccia, along with the Director of ECLAC's Production, Productivity and Management Division, Mario Cimoli, opened the Regional Preparatory Meeting for the Third Ministerial Conference about the Information Society in Latin America and the Caribbean. The meeting was also inaugurated by José Clastornik, Executive Director of the Agency of Electronic Government and Information Society (AGESIC) of Uruguay, Francisco González, Head of Electronic Government and Systems Integration of the Presidency of the Republic of El Salvador, and Jaime Honores Coronado, Chairman of the National Office of Electronic Government and Computing (ONGEI) of Peru.

At the opening, Mario Cimoli thanked the host country, Uruguay, for receiving the member countries of the Regional Action Plan eLAC as well as the country that currently holds its presidency, El Salvador, and Peru, the country that receives it. Alberto Breccia highlighted the need to enhance the digital agendas as well as information and communication technologies (ICT) as tools for development, in order to make progress on social justice.

In the Preparatory Meeting, which precedes the III Ministerial Conference, ECLAC, as Technical Secretary of eLAC2010, will present the Monitoring of the advances reached by the region related to the goals of the Regional Action Plan, the reports of the activities of the Work Groups, the results of the Public Consultation and a proposal for a new Plan eLAC2015. These documents will be debated by the delegates of all the countries of the region. Representatives of the civil society and the private sector will also have the opportunity to expose their points of view.
