Quito, April 1- Mexico is interested in joining Unasur, Union of South American Nations, according to the country’s Deputy Foreign Affairs minister Ruben Beltrán. “When a club is successful one wants to join in”, said Beltran during a visit to Quito where he met Unasur officials.

“Unasur is developing in a very efficient way the fundamental political commitments of South America and this is very attractive”, said Beltran who added Mexico wants to be part of the history which the organization is achieving “and we look at it with enormous respect”.

Beltran said Mexico is essentially a Latin American people, although geographically in North America, therefore “we would feel rather strange is we didn’t belong to Unasur”.

“I’m sure we can provide an extra-region perspective which will enrich the debate inside Unasur; undoubtedly Latin America’s second largest economy has something to contribute to that dialogue”, said Beltran.

Beltran was in Ecuador for a regional consulting meeting at deputy minister level which addressed several issues: democracy, Honduras, the border conflict between Cost Rica and Nicaragua and the Libyan situation. Trade was also on the table and mechanisms to facilitate commerce and cooperation.

Before leaving, Beltran revealed that his Ecuadorean peer Kintto Lucas promised to sponsor Mexico’s aspiration to become member of Unasur.
