Saint John, August 15 (PL)- The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Baldwin Spencer, called on the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to bet on new information and communication technologies (ICTs) to promote integration and development in the region.

In a message to the OECS Assembly, Spencer pledged to provide member states material supports for the ICT implementation in the area.

In Spencer´s opinion the technology will be emphasized in the future and serve to exchange information, research and communication among the countries of Eastern Caribbean, the Antigua Observer newspaper reported in its online edition.

The Prime Minister is the current President pro tempore of the OECS Assembly, which last week held its first meeting here focused on the progress of the single market program and support to the economic growth of member states.

Another topic of discussion was the functioning of the Economic Union of the bloc, a trade integration treaty that entered into force in January 2011.

The OECS is made up of Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Montserrat, while, Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands are partners; and was created in 1973 in St Kitts after signing the Treaty of Basseterre.
