IDB: PERU TO BECOME ONE OF LARGEST ECONOMIES IN LATIN AMERICA

Lima, August 20 (Andina).- Peru is bound to become one of the largest economies in South America and Latin America thanks to its rapid and sustained economic growth over the last ten years, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has said.

"All predictions, even from independent analysts, show that Peru is a country set to become one of the largest economies in South America and Latin America," said IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno.

He recalled that New York-based newspaper The Wall Street Journal recently described Peru as one of the new Latin American tigers, not only for its growth, but for its sound and stable currency and high credit rating in relation to its neighbors.

"There is no country in Latin America that shows the kind of growth Peru has had in the last ten years. It even achieved growth of 7.5 percent, which is more like an Asian country," Moreno added.

The IDB chief said that Peru's economic leadership in the region will be accelerated to the extent that growth reaches the poorest and impinges on social inclusion policies.

In this regard, he highlighted the recent signing of three agreements with the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) for a total of $ 140 million, which will be used to finance projects in the sanitation, education and environment sectors.

Moreno stressed the need to measure the economic impact of inclusion policies, to evaluate its effects on various social indicators, in which the IDB will support the MEF.

"The IDB is a partner that is very proud to work with Peru on these social inclusion issues, such as education, health, among others," he said.

He said the government of President Ollanta Humala is working on identifying the neediest populations to provide them with quality basic services.
