MEXICO AND RUSSIA STRENGTHEN PARLIAMENTARY RELATIONS

Mexico City, May 17 (PL)- Foreign Minister José Antonio Meade extolled the strengthening of bilateral parliamentary diplomacy in a meeting today with President of the Council of the Federation of the General Assembly of Russia, Senator Valentina Matvienko.

The Foreign Ministry of Mexico added in a communiqué that the senator´s visit is on occasion of the handover to Mexico of the presidency of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum, to be in session on Jan.12-16, 2014 at Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico.

During the meeting, Meade welcomed the signing of the Agreement of Cooperation between the Mexican Senate and the Council of the Russian Federation, oriented to enrich parliamentary links between both nations, said the text.

The Mexican diplomat appreciated the invitation made by Russian President Vladimir Putin to his Mexican peer Enrique Pena Nieto to attend the next Summit of Leaders of the Group of Twenty, to be held in Saint Petersburg on Sept. 5-6, 2013.

Meade and Matvienko agreed on the excellent level of the Mexican-Russian dialogue, and highlighted the importance to continue political contacts to further strengthen relations between their two countries.
