Port Spain, May 28- U.S. vice-president Joe Biden and his wife, Dr Jill Biden, arrived yesterday for a two-day visit as guests of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago.
Biden and his delegation were welcomed by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Dookeran, a release from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) said.
Persad-Bissessar and Biden met privately for bilateral discussions before the multilateral meeting that includes CARICOM heads of state and government and of the Dominican Republic.
Topics to be discussed with Biden will include regional security, trade, human and social development, and energy.
It is anticipated that this meeting with the vice-president may serve to lay the groundwork for robust cooperation during the administration’s second term, the OPM said.
Biden and his wife will pay a courtesy call on President Anthony Carmona and his wife Reema tomorrow morning, following which they will leave for meetings at the Diplomatic Centre, La Fantasie, St Ann’s.
Haitian president Michel Joseph Martelly, who is also CARICOM chairman, will be on hand to address the media.
Biden, his wife, and the U.S. delegation will depart Trinidad and Tobago later today afternoon.
