SURINAME CONSOLIDATES ENERGY INFORMATION MANAGEMENT WITH OLADE

Quito, September 2- On August 22 and 23, the Latin American Energy Organization, OLADE, and Ministerie Van Natuurlijke Hulpbronnen (Ministry of Natural Resources) of Suriname held a technical workshop to evaluate and consolidate the development of the National Energy Information System (SIEN) in that country.

Paola Carrera, OLADE's Specialist and technical staff of the Energy Information Committee SIEN, held technical visits to the electricity company EnergieBedrijvenSuriname (EBS) and state oil producer, refiner and marketer of petroleum and its derivatives, Staatsolie , in order to collect, analyze and consolidate the energy statistics supply and demand, prices and infrastructure in these sectors and to promote the entry of monthly data of Suriname to the SIEN.

Alongside, the local technical team of the SIEN was trained in the management, configuration and administration of the software tool. After that, the representatives of the main energy-economic sector entities of Suriname that make up the Energy Information Committee of the country, such as EBS, Staatsolie, Bauxite Institute of Suriname (BIS), the Department of Rural Energy (DEV), the Central Bank of Suriname, Algemeen De Douane Suriname (ANDA), President's Office, the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV), the National Planning Office ( Planbureau ), The National Institute for Environment and Development (MINIMUM) and Anton de Kom University of Suriname participated in the follow-through meeting of the SIEN of Suriname, on August 23, 2013.

The opening ceremony of the meeting was in charge of the Minister of Natural Resources, Honourable JimHok, stressing the importance of sharing the country's energy information, included within the Information System implemented by OLADE two years ago in the Ministry, helping decision making and the country's energy planning.

As a result of that meeting, the representatives agreed on commitments, recommendations and actions plan to be held in the coming months which includes the development and execution of a Memorandum of Understanding between the information providers, data collection for the last ten years and a call for the next follow-up meeting on 30 September this year.

This technical mission is part of the monitoring process and strengthening of the SIEN in the Caribbean countries, in order to support sustainable development of the energy sector in the region.
