CARICOM URGES MEMBERS TO JOIN CARIBBEAN COURT OF JUSTICE

Kingston, October 14 (PL)- The Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Irwin LaRocque, called on the state members of that regional bloc to join the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) as a court of final appeal, local media reported.

During a news conference at the University of the West Indies, whose regional headquarters is in this capital, LaRoque recalled the integrationist role of that court, responsible for ensuring that the decisions of the Community are fulfilled.

In his opinion, recognizing the Caribbean court as the court of final appeal in the CARICOM, would complete the circle of sovereignty of the area.

He warned that although there is concern about the delay of some Caribbean Community state members in joining the CCJ, it is not unusual that it would take some time for litigation to be brought before that jurisdiction.

In January, the government of Dominica asked to join the entity.
