United Nations, November 8 (PL)- Bolivia was elected here to preside in 2014 over the Group of 77 plus China, a forum of developing countries that defends progressive positions and common interests at the UN.

Bolivia received the support of the Group, which was established in 1964 and represents more than 130 countries. Bolivia's permanent representative at the United Nations, Sacha Llorenti, said that he appreciated the confidence placed in his country.

For his part, the president of the UN General Assembly, John Ashe, congratulated Bolivian President Evo Morales on the election.

"Taking the leadership of the G-77 is an important responsibility, and I have confidence in the experience, diplomatic skills and leadership of Bolivia," he said.

Referring to the topic earlier, Morales said that the choice of La Paz to lead the group was the result of recognition of their social and anti-imperialist policies.

"It would be a great joy for a country considered small, poor, sometimes not even known, to have this opportunity. I have great confidence in (the) ambassadors who will do the voting, I have great confidence in (the) world's foreign ministers of the UN to approve this proposal," he said at a previous event.
