Government: Cuba is a Socialist state of workers, independent and sovereign, organized with all and for the good of all, as a unitary and Democratic Republic, for the enjoyment of political liberty, social justice, individual and collective well-being and human solidarity (Art. 1 of the Constitution).

Administrative division: 14 provinces: Ciego de Avila; Cienfuegos; Ciudad de La Habana; Granma; Guantánamo; Holguin; Isla de la Juventud; La Habana; Las Tunas; Matanzas; Pinar del Rio; Sancti Spiritus; Santiago de Cuba; Villa Clara; and 1 special municipality: Camaguey.

Independence: May 20th, 1902 (from Spain 10 December 1898; administered by the US. from 1898 to 1902).

Constitution: February 24th, 1976; amended July 1992 and June 2002.

Suffrage: All citizens with legal capacity to do so, have the right to intervene in the State’s orientation, either directly or through the representatives they elected to integrate the organs of people's power, and to participate, for this purpose, as provided in the law, in periodic elections and referendums, through free, equal and secret vote. Each elector is entitled to vote (Art. 110 of the Constitution). Voting age: 16.

Executive branch: The Council of Ministers is the highest executive and administrative body and constitutes the Government of the Republic. It is one of the superior organizational structures of the people’s power and has a collegiate nature. It is made up by the Head of State and Government, who is its President, the first Vice-President, who is also first Vice President of the Council of State, Vice-Presidents, Ministers, the Secretary and those authorities that upon a proposal from the President are appointed to take positions as members of the Council by the people's National Assembly or by the Council of State.
